Big Fish

Big Fish

The water was getting deeper. My long flippers and life vest fought against my trying to dive down and get a better shot of a strange fish with stripes and a huge mouth. The water was suddenly colder and the feel of it was no longer that balmy, sticky feel of the warm shallows of the Caribbean. I came to the surface and took the snorkel out of my mouth and took a few deep breaths, put the snorkel back in, and then became as aerodynamic as I could in order to defy the foam of the life vest. I was able to go deeper, but still not deep enough to get a close up of that funny fish. I surfaced, cleared the snorkel, then went back to floating along and watching the funny fish at the bottom. He didn’t seem to care that the water was getting deeper and colder. Suddenly, I heard shrieks and screams while under the water. The first thing to come to mind: shark. I thought about all the shark weeks I had watched; I thought about every shark fact I could recall. Caribbean...Caribbean...it could be almost any of the species! I didn’t want to look above the water for fear that the predator might sneak up on me.

Then I saw a shadow on the ocean floor.
            Then I saw more shadows.

I looked forward to find myself face to face with a large, unattractive fish and a ton of his friends. There were so many, and though they had an unfriendly look they just moved along as if it was just another day with obnoxious tourists. I raised my head above water to see what all the noise was about. Some girls were screaming and trying to get out of the water because they were afraid of the giant fish. I thought they were sissies. So I put my head back into the glassy water and found myself in the middle of even more huge Jacks. It became a little unnerving at this time. So many big fish...just one me with a camera.
